Robert Jenrick has been a Member of Parliament for Newark since winning a by-election in 2014. Born in Wolverhampton in 1982, he studied history at Cambridge before qualifying as a solicitor. The High Court later quashed the decision as "unlawful by reason of apparent bias". The scandal damaged his reputation and contributed to his removal from the Cabinet in 2021.

Immigration became Jenrick's defining issue after his appointment as Immigration Minister in 2022. He resigned in December 2023, arguing that the government's Rwanda asylum plan did not go far enough to address illegal migration. This marked a rightward shift in his politics, having previously voted Remain in the EU referendum. He has advocated for leaving the European Convention on Human Rights and designating countries like Albania, Turkey and Vietnam as safe for asylum purposes.

Following the Conservative defeat in the 2024 general election, Jenrick ran for party leader against Kemi Badenoch. He received 43.5% of the membership vote, losing to Badenoch's 56.5%. Badenoch appointed him Shadow Justice Secretary, but on 15 January 2026, she sacked him and suspended his party membership over allegations he was plotting to defect to Reform UK.
