About our UK Housing Emergency news

Latest news on the UK Housing Emergency, covering the latest insights and updates on affordable housing and the ongoing housing crisis.

The UK housing emergency is a situation where millions of people are denied a safe, stable and affordable home. According to Shelter, a charity that campaigns for better housing, 17.5 million adults in Britain (34%) are impacted by the housing emergency, and an alarming 3.2 million adults wouldn't have enough in savings to pay their rent for more than a month if they lost their job.

The main causes of the housing emergency are:

    • The lack of social housing: With a recorded 76% of social renters saying without their social home they wouldn’t be able to afford to live in their local area, the decline in social homes has become critical.
    • The rising cost of rent: With official government data showing private rents at a record high and 55% of private renters having had their rent put up in the last year, the cost of rent in the UK is making it increasingly difficult for low-income individuals.
    • The lack of support for renters: 2.1 million tenants (37%) are now struggling or behind with their rent due to the increase in payments, and renters in the UK have few rights, making them more vulnerable to exploitation by landlords and easy eviction.

Shelter's latest research reveals some of the worst figures since before the pandemic, with 2.2 million renters (34%) immediately unable to pay their rent from their savings if they lost their jobs. The situation is precarious, with thousands of renters one paycheque away from losing their home, leading to a spectre of homelessness.

Shelter argues that the only sustainable, long-term alternative to expensive, unstable private renting is to build more social homes, offering long-term secure tenancies with rents set at local incomes. The benefits of social housing to local communities are significant, with 67% of social renters saying where they live feels like a safe, stable, and secure home, and 53% saying living in a social home enables them to stay close to family and friends.
