The 2026 FIFA World Cup represents a historic milestone as the first tournament to be jointly hosted by three nations and the first to feature an expanded field of 48 teams. Taking place from 11 June to 19 July 2026, the competition will unfold across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with 104 matches scheduled across the 39-day tournament.
The draw, held in Washington on 5 December 2025, divided the 48 competing nations into 12 groups of four teams. The opening match takes place at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on 11 June, with Mexico facing South Africa. The final will be contested at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on 19 July. From the quarter-final stage onwards, all matches will be played in the United States, which will host 78 of the 104 games, while Canada and Mexico will each stage 13 matches.
This tournament marks Mexico's third time hosting World Cup matches, following memorable editions in 1970 and 1986, making it the first country to host or co-host three men's World Cups. The United States previously welcomed the tournament in 1994, while Canada hosts World Cup matches for the first time. The 16 host cities include major metropolitan areas such as New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver, Mexico City, and Guadalajara, each offering state-of-the-art stadiums and diverse cultural experiences for visiting supporters.
The expanded format introduces significant changes to the tournament structure. The top two teams from each group, plus the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to a newly introduced round of 32, creating additional knockout fixtures. All three host nations received automatic qualification berths, with the remaining 45 places determined through continental qualifying competitions that concluded in March 2026. The official match ball, the Trionda, features red, green, and blue colours representing the three host nations.
